Pace and plans

Yesterday LovBoy and me took some time to define the themes for wind instruments. We are still recording vocals because of hyper occupied Mici, which barely manages to find spare time to work. We planned to record all vocals by mid October, but (as always) the pace of life does not allow the fulfillment of desire set. For this reason, we have decided not to wait for the completion of the voices to move ahead.

The fear that surrounds us  is fear of  too long working on the album. Fatigue of continuous work on the same songs has already begun to appear which tells us that it is time to enter the last phase of work . The current plan is to maximize our efforts to swallow (during November) last two major  jobs – recording of  a wind instrument players (trombone, trumpet, french horn) and string quartet  (cello, viola, violin). In December starts standard before- new year -madness, and therefore in that period we can forget the organization of the recording, which includes such a large number of people.

Besides  work on arrangements for wind instruments,  we managed to record a brand new bass line for a song that is on German language. The first thing you learn when you are working on creating the album is that songs are never finished – until the final mix. You are constantly modifying their shape and theme lines because the song itself encourages that changes. Currently on our computer in the studio we have about 20 different mixes for each song. One can easily follow how  the ideas and arrangements have changed over time.

Nice news is that we managed to solve the issue of space in Bigz building because we found new roommates. Miljakovac minimal techno crew are totally cool. We quickly agreed to resolve mutual problems. We remain in our work space, and they found nice space for work. This town is small. It turns out that we have mutual friends – legendary brothers G. from Miljakovac hood. With Džeremija (one of the 3 crazy brothers G) I  played long time ago. He really knew to punch the drum. He was without technical skills but had an incredibly raw and authentic energy. We had some great time during fucked up 90-ties in the bomb shelter where we played. In that dark time of war, inflation and poverty, we broke into a new bomb shelter on the Čukarica (part of Belgrade) where we played completely incognito. I haven’t seen Džeri for years, so I use a new roommates to pass my greetings. Music friendships are special ones. It is like sharing same secret. Everything happens faster and more spontaneous. Both pretty and ugly things. Too many emotions in the game.

Tempo i planovi

Juče smo LovBoy i ja seli da izdefinišemo teme za duvače. Snimanje vokala još uvek traje i prilično se odužilo zbog hiper angažovane Mici koja jedva uspeva da nađe slobodno vreme za naš rad. Planirali smo da završimo sa vokalima do polovine oktobra, ali (kao i uvek) tempo života nam ne dopušta ispunjenje zacrtanih želja. Iz tog razloga, odlučili smo da ne čekamo na završetak rada sa glasovima da bi krenuli dalje.

Strah koji nas okružuje je vezan za predugačak rad na albumu. Umor od kontinuiranog rada na istim pesmama je već počeo da se pojavljuje što nam govori da je vreme da uđemo u poslednju fazu rada na albumu. Trenutni plan je da se maksimalno potrudimo da tokom novembra progutamo poslednja dva krupna zalogoja – snimanje duvača (trombon, trube, horna) i gudačkog kvarteta (čelo, viola, violine). Kada počne decembar počinje i standardno prednovogodišnje ludilo, a samim tim možemo da zaboravimo na organizovanje snimanja koje uključuje ovoliki broj ljudi.

Pored raspisivanja aranžmana za duvače uspeli smo i da snimimo potpuno nove bas linije za pesmu koja je na nemačkom jeziku. Prva stvar koju naučite kada radite na stvaranju albuma je da pesme nikad nisu gotove – sve do samog finalnog miksa. Menjate im formu i muzičke deonice jer vas pesma sama podstiče na određene promene. Trenutno na računaru u studiju imamo po 20-tak različitih miksova za svaku stvar. Tačno može da se prati kako su se ideje i aranžmani menjali tokom vremena.

Lepa vest je da smo uspeli da rešimo pitanje radnog prostora u Bigzu jer su nam se uselili novi cimeri. Miljakovac minimal tehno ekipa je skroz kul. Sve smo se brzo dogovorili i rešili obostrane probleme. Mi ostajemo u našem prostoru, a oni su dobili prostor za rad. Ovaj grad je mali. Ispostavilo se da imamo zajedničke prijatelje – legende Miljakovca braću G. Sa Džeremijom (jednim od 3 luda brata G) sam davno svirao. Taj čovek je stvarno znao da udara u bubanj. Bez tehničkog znanja u rukama ali sa neverovatno sirovom i autentičnom snagom. Super smo se zezali 90-tih u atomskom skloništu gde smo svirali. U onom mraku od rata, inflacije i nemaštine provalili smo u novo atomsko sklonište na Čukaričkoj padini gde smo noćima svirali potpuno inkognito. Sa Džerijem se nisam video godinama, pa sam iskoristio nove cimere za prenošenje pozdrava starom drugu. Muzička prijateljstva su posebne vrste. Nekako osećate da su to ljudi sa kojima delite tajnu koju malo ko razume. Sve se odvija spontanije i brže. I lepe i ružne stvari. Previše emocija je u igri.

5. At the beginning record all the potential ideas and in the end always minimize.

2. Razmišljaj o gudačima kao o grupi koja zvuči kao jedan instrument.

4. Nađi paralelni modus.

Kerovođa

1. Pažljivo gledaj mimiku drugih ljudi jer reči su nepotpun izvor informacija.
2. Koristi instrumente razmišljajući o adekvatnoj upotrebi njihove boje.

Music hologram of Nikola Tesla

I met MP1 after a long time. I was a little worried because of health problems that he is currently facing. Life often seems like an endless series of problems that are just changing form. We talked about current work and how far we came with the recording process as we are approaching the mixing stage where his knowledge, sense and experience can be of great value ,  as well as the situation regarding the issue of the completion of his album.

Three years ago we recorded  its concert at Guarnerius (Belgrade) , and then we have re-recorded certain instruments that complemented the sound of the show. I  spent a lot of time on mixing that material because MP1 decided to put me in the roll of  producer.  I gave the best of me, creating a sound image in a  modern / contemporary way trying to achieve a sound brilliance that could correspond to  master piece of written music text.

After I finished the production we had to do  just a few more steps that are necessary for bringing us close to publishing. Of course, since these depend only of  MP1, and as usual he is constantly torn between the obligation of a million everyday jobs we are waiting almost a year for these actions. Now,  we have finally made a realistic plan that should be realized in next few weeks. I can hardly wait for the publication of this album, because the MP1 has masterfully written 10 compositions that we had managed to record quite good . Now,  they will become a significant part of world cultural heritage in the area of contemporary classical music.

Publishing of the album „Music hologram of Nikola Tesla“ will be followed by a documentary film about the creation of the album that I filmed from the beginning of the preparation until the execution -the concert. The idea is to divided it in to 10 short episodes that will go once a week supporting promotion of the album. We will use similar technical sound processing to finalized our second album so we talked, also, about the ways of doing it and dates .

I hope that we will finished our two important and large projects : Karneval „Movies“ and Miroslav  Savić „Music Hologram of Nikola Tesla“ till the end of this year.  My heart will be full.

Muzički hologram Nikole Tesle

Video sam se MP1jem nakon dužeg vremena. Malo me je zabrinuo zbog zdravstvenih poteškoća sa kojima se trenutno suočava. Život veoma često izgleda kao nepregledan niz problema koji samo menjaju formu. Pričali smo o trenutnom radu i dokle smo stigli sa snimanjem pošto se približavamo fazi miksovanja u kojoj će nam njegovo znanje, osećaj i iskustvo biti od velike koristi, kao i o situaciji vezanoj za pitanje završetka njegovog albuma.

Pre tri godine smo snimili njegov koncert u Guarneriusu, a nakon toga smo dosnimili određene instrumente koji su dopunili zvučnu sliku sa koncerta. Ja sam dosta vremena utrošio na sređivanje miksa jer je MP1 odlučio da meni dodeli ulogu producenta. Prihvatajući se tog odgovornog posla dao sam sve od sebe kreirajući zvučnu sliku koja na moderan/savremeni način predstavlja njegove genijalne kompozicije.

Pošto sam završio produkciju ostalo nam je još samo par koraka da finiširamo ceo album i da ga konačno objavimo. Naravno, pošto tih par koraka zavise samo od MP1, a on je po običaju konstantno rastrzan između milion obaveza čekanje se odužilo na skoro godinu dana. Sada smo konačno napravili realan plan koji bi trebalo da realizujemo naredih nedelja. Jedva čekam objavljivanje ovog albuma, jer je MP1 maestralno napisao 10 kompozicija koje smo uspeli da prilično dobro snimimo i koje će postati deo svetske kulturne baštine u segmentu savremene klasične muzike.

Objavljivanje albuma „Muzički hologram Nikole Tesle“ će pratiti dokumentarni film o nastanku albuma koji sam snimao od početka priprema za koncert  pa sve do samog izvođenja tj. koncerta. Ideja je da ga podelim u 10 kraćih epizoda koje bi jednom nedeljno bile prikazivane u sklopu promocije albuma. Pored toga, iskoristićemo sličnu tehničku obradu zvuka i za finalizaciju našeg drugog albuma pa smo se dogovorali i oko načina i vremena kada ćemo to raditi.

Nadam se da ćemo do kraja ove godine uspeti da realizujemo naša 2 obimna projekta: Karneval „Movies“ i Miroslav  Savić „Muzički hologram Nikole Tesle“. Srce će mi biti puno.

On the sidelines

During the last ten days we have been recording vocals. We finished voices for 4 songs and have 2 more and then we can record remaining stuff like wind instruments and strings. Mici and I maintain good / continuous tempo of work, and Loverboy prescribed itself  absences and let us two to  finish this part of the job.

What I have learned so far working with many people is that everyone has their own interests and motives involved in a story. Not everyone is interested in the (exhausting) process of recording, which means endless repetition of identical items in the search for the best possible performance.
Since I have reputation  known as “ difficult  man for cooperation“ I decided to watch a bit more realistic matters of joint work.
Musicians are generally a group of lazy, infantile, poorly educated (in general cultural sense) and extremely irresponsible people. Do I  need to say that these are all characteristics that I can not stand? For this reason, there are many people with whom I had worked . My tolerance was nearly zero towards such behavior and that is why I often give up than to continue working with those who are not serious. The band is a sensitive form. You must have both a good sense of how to develop common ideas and also respect for different sensibilities. You need to know when you are right, and when not. My current philosophy is that communication is crucial. As long as I have good and continuous communication with people with whom I work nothing is a problem.
So far, everything is functioning relatively well in relation to our triangle. I have a feeling that we are all understood its place within our music story, and quite successfully managed the process of recording our second album. We begin to think about  rehearsals for a live performance because of  a couple of offers that are in circulation (Switzerland, Poland, Japan). Of course, here (in Serbia)  no one called us to play. Because of luck of support from our publishing house (it is a subject about which I will have something to say – later) and the absence of any advertising and marketing, as well as the fact that we hardly been on the air  (thanks to all the music editors / reporters who played our music on the air) I think we are still almost where we were before the release of the album – on the sidelines, away from the ears of the public.
Everyone should do their job. Time will show how much we were good at it. As musicians / artists and also as a  music editors / critics / journalists.
